After an excellent pre-season, a new management set up in Clifford Adams, John Clarke, Paul Quigley and Andy McDowell as well as big changes in playing personnel, the firsts got league proceedings under way today at ‘home' to Sofia Farmer - themselves with wholesale changes and a lot of intrigue surrounding them.

The game was a battle from start to finish and it was new signing and club captain Ryan Bamber who opened the Wakehurst account after just six minutes, heading home to give the hosts a 1-0 lead and perfect start before Zach Barr hit the woodwork.

Shortly after, Andy Millar rattled the crossbar with a header from a McCartney corner as Wakehurst gathered momentum in the search for a second goal which came just prior to the half hour mark as Stewart Nixon smashed home a first time finish from distance following a poor clearance from the Sofia goalkeeper.

With moments to go before the interval, Sofia were awarded a penalty after Andy Findlay was harshly adjudged to have brought down a visiting player but justice was done as the Wakehurst goalkeeper saved brilliantly with this feet.

Half Time: Wakehurst 2-0 Sofia Farmer

The second period saw both sides really push to score as both again hit the woodwork while a terrific driving run and shot from Nixon forced and excellent save from the visiting ‘keeper who pushed the ball over the bar.

From the resulting corner, the ball dropped to Andy Laughlin who caught the ball sweetly on the volley and in to the far corner beyond the goalkeeper for 3-0.

Wakehurst created more chances, as did their opponents but the game finished with a brilliant opening day victory and clean sheet for Clifford Adams’ side.
