Remo (H)

Sat 3rd Sep - 2:00pm

The Strollers opened up their league campaign with a victory over Newtownabbey side Remo at the Ballymena Showgrounds and welcomed Jamie Speirs and Peter Adams back in to the squad following holidays away.

The opening spell of the game was fairly open and the visitors looked threatening from set pieces with captain Jason Bannon having two decent opportunities but headed off target while Peter Adams collected a through ball from John Alexander but a good save from the Remo ‘keeper kept the game scoreless.

The deadlock was broken on 29 minutes as Remo went forward but a tackle from Jason Connolly on the edge of the box fell to Charles Allen, he in turn found Adams who split the defence and found Alexander who’s neat touch rounded the goalkeeper and he slotted in to the empty net to complete a quick counter attack.

Half Time: Wakehurst Strollers 1-0 Remo

The Strollers found their feet in the second period and started to play some good football and were unlucky not to increase their lead as Paul Gilchrist’s free kick clipped the crossbar and Quigley had a driven shot well saved by the goalkeeper.

Jamie Speirs came off the bench just after the hour and made an instant impact as his cross from the left found Roy Colville who cleverly headed back across goal to allow Peter Adams to tap home at the back post.

Speirs was unlucky not to make it 3-0 as his terrific strike from 25 yards was acrobatically pushed away by the Remo goalkeeper as it was heading straight for the top corner.

Remo had a final opportunity late on but Eoin Bradley shot straight at Dean Adams.
