The Strollers faced higher league opposition in the Canada Trophy and seemed to relish the challenge as they ran out convincing winners.

The game started with Wakehurst letting the opposition play around the back four for the first ten minutes without causing any threat, then they started their pressing game  and put Desertmartin under a lot of pressure with the returning Stephen Cochrane holding the ball up well and also linking up with the impressive Jamie Stevenson, who had been called up from the U17's.

The deadlock was broken when good crisp passing in the midfield saw Jolon Cupples tee up Tom Campbell from 25 yards who hit a dipping shot into the bottom left corner to make it 1-0 to the visitors.

Strollers continued to press but got caught on a very swift counter attack by Desertmartin on the half hour mark which levelled the scores at one apiece.

The game was only level for eight minutes however, when jolon cupples won a free kick after tormenting their right back, and Paul Gilchrist stepped up to ping the free kick into the top right corner from the opposite side of the box.

Half time: Desertmartin Swifts 1-2 Strollers

Strollers came out in the second half with no intention of sitting back and holding their slender lead, but that doesn't mean the defence weren't busy and Clarke, Burns, Colville and Logan were outstanding in not giving Desertmartin any joy with their attacks.

20 minutes into the second half, U17 player Mark Cochrane won a corner after pressing the Desertmartin defence into a mistake and the veteran Roy Colville buried a header into the top of the net to increase the Strollers' advantage.

Tom Campbell then ran on to a loose ball on the edge of the box on 70 minutes and struck a thunderous half volley into the top corner to end the game as a contest and send the Strollers into the next round of the cup.

Caretaker managers Peter Adams and Peter Thompson said the boys played out of their skin and couldn't be more proud of them.
