Brantwood (A)

Sat 11th Feb - 2:00pm

Wakehurst were on their travels up the Shore Road to take on Brantwood in what was going to be a tough contest again the fourth placed side.

Their last encounter proved a tight affair with Wakehurst coming away with a 3-2 win at Mill Meadow and 'Hurst knew that nothing less than a victory would do to keep the pressure on promotion favourites Coagh Utd.

Gregg Shannon in goal was making his debut for his new club and on the 19th minute, his first job was to pick the ball out of the net after a long ball played forward after Nixon had been totally wiped out by the Brantwood centre back seen their striker one versus one against Shannon and the lobbed the debutant giving him no chance.

On the 27th minute, Wakehurst were awarded a free and a deflection off the wall resulted in Peter McClure crossing in a pin point cross where captain Andrew Laughlin hammered it home from close range to bring the scores level.

On the 31st minute, the Brantwood centreback was over physical with Nixon again and seen red leaving his team with ten men.

Eight minutes later, a McCartney corner came in and McClure was unlucky to see his well struck effort come off the crossbar.

With a minute to go to the interval, Andy Laughlin was played through on goal and as he took it past the goalkeeper, was brought down for a penalty. David McLaughlin stepped up and seen his well struck penalty well saved by the Dempster in the Brantwood goal to send both teams in on level terms.

Half Time: Brantwood 1-1 Wakehurst

At the start of the second half, Brantwood were defensively well organised with their ten men and Hurst were having to be patient as well as dealing with some quality goalkeeping by the Brantwood keeper in their quest for a winner.

On the 71st minute, Shannon made an outstanding save to stop Brantwood from taking the lead and on the 73rd minute, the visitors finally took the lead.

In the best move of the game, Kurtis McCartney picked the ball up at left back linking up with Nixon, Price and Barr resulting in Nixon being played in on goal where he expertly tucked away his 18th goal of the season.

On the 82nd minute, good work by Laughlin in and around the box resulted in Nixon finding strike partner Barr to tuck away his tenth of the season in fine fashion hammering it past the helpless keeper to seal the win and keep the pressure on at the top of the table.

Special praise must go to this group who put in an extremely professional performance in horrendous windy conditions to keep their club in contention.
